We had another early morning (this was the trend on our trip!), up about 6:30 am and made ourselves pancakes so we could enjoy some of the maple syrup we had purchased the day before. After breakfast we packed up camp, before the rain returned.
We drove through Portsmouth, NH, but since it was raining pretty hard and our daughter was napping we decided to see it from the car rather than get out and walk around. Portsmouth has a great deal of old buildings lining the downtown core. We then drove out to the point past gorgeous old homes. The downtown core reminded us a great deal of Old Montreal.
After our drive around Portsmouth we crossed the bridge to Kittery, ME. We stopped at a couple of the outlets for some shopping (after seeing Freeport we would recommend skipping Kittery as the same shops are in Freeport where it is much nicer). The Trading Post was a recommended stop so we checked it out. To be honest, I would not recommend stopping there, it is name brand clothing which is at all of the outlets except it is not discounted there. They do not have anything different or quirky. They do have some camping gear and books on the second floor, however if you are looking for this sort of thing, check out one of the LL Bean outlets along the way or wait until you reach Freeport for LL Bean or the outlet.
We continued on Hwy 1 all the way to Freeport, meandering into some of the small towns along the way. We drove through Ogunquit while it was pouring rain and drove out to the beach. On a sunny day this would be a great beach to spend a day at and the town itself was really cute.
In Portland, ME we drove around trying to find a hotel room, but there were none to be had, so we continued on to Freeport which had not been our original destination for the night.
In Freeport we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express which you pass just before entering the town of Freeport. The handy thing with this hotel is they have a laundry room (1 washer and 1 dryer) which allowed us to get some things dried out and cleaned. As well we were able to give our daughter a bath before bed so she had some semblance of a routine.
The rain was letting up as we checked into the hotel so we headed into Freeport to wander around. The streets and shops were pretty quiet by the time we got into town which was quite nice for us to enjoy some shopping and get some dinner. This is where Dave had his first Lobster Roll which he said was the best one of the trip and at the best price as well. We got it at what looked like an ice cream stand/convenience store (I don’t recall the name of the place).
We forgot to pull out our camera this day to take photos of some of the interesting sights we saw or the towns we visited, so all we have is memories.
You can check out my posts from our previous days on our trip here:
We woke up about 6:30 am to a nice day. Had breakfast, cleaned up and took it easy, then headed out from camp about 8:30 am. We took route 107 through Woodstock, VT to Quechee Gorge where we stopped at the visitor centre to gather some information on sights to see. We then took the trail from the visitor centre down to the gorge. It is a fairly steep hill down, but easily manageable as the distance is about 0.5 mi down. Once down we wandered out on the rocks to get a better view of the gorge and let Tessa play in the water.
At the bottom we headed up the trail past the entrance to the visitor centre to the dam to see the waterfall there and then on to the pond.
After the hike it was time to explore the area. We drove through Quechee Village and stopped at the Simon Pearce Glass Blowing studio to see the artists at work. They had some beautiful glass blown items as well as pottery at the studio for sale. Unfortunately we did not have room in the vehicle on this trip to be able to pick up a piece. There is a nice little waterfall off the rear of the studio as well.
After our short stop we continued on our way to Sugarbush Farm (http://www.sugarbushfarm.com/)which I had seen mentioned in a number of different posts on the internet as a place to see. At the information centre they also recommended this so we figured me better check it out. The drive is very nice and scenic out to the farm. You will pass by some high end resorts and gorgeous old mansions. The staff there are very nice and friendly and there is an old lab that wanders the property named Max. They were very open to letting us tie our dog up in the shade near the cars and Tessa and Max laid near each other just checking each other out while we went to try some cheese and maple syrup. After trying a number of cheeses we decided on the 8 yr old cheddar and the sage cheddar. our daughter liked all of the cheeses she was offered to try. We enjoyed the maple syrup tasting as well and picked up a couple different grades to take home with us. After tasting and shopping we went out to the petting zoo area which is near the entrance. They had a calf tied up and various small animals in their pens which you could see. Our daughter wanted to pet all of the animals.
We decided to continue on the backroads back into Woodstock where we wandered the main street, checking out some of the shops and we stopped for lunch at one of the local cafe’s.
Once we were shopped out we headed back to camp so our daughter could take a nap before we decided to hit up the beach. It is a small sandy beach with a nice park area around it. The water was the perfect temperature with a nice sandy bottom. There were many families there with their kids. Our daughter was having so much fun swimming in her lifejacket and watching some of the older kids play in the water.
That evening we cooked dinner at the camp and once our daughter went to bed we played some more sequence.
It rained overnight, but thanks to the lean-to our tent was nice and dry.
To see what else we got up to on this trip check out the links below:
We were woken early on our 2nd day of our trip by grouse in the forest nearby. We enjoyed our first camp breakfast before packing up to get back out on the road.
We decided to take the High Peaks scenic byway this day and enjoyed the scenic drive and saw tons of hiking trails being well used. (We will definitely have to return to tackle some of these trails at a future date).
We drove the main strip of Lake George, and noted it was a very busy spot. The main strip was quite tacky from what we saw and the traffic was insane. We did however decide to drive up Prospect Mountain. One thing to note is that dogs are not allowed on the trail to the summit so I would recommend you don’t take your pet with you. They did not mention this at the gate, but signs were posted everywhere at the parking lot that dogs were not permitted. Since this was the case, Dave stayed back at the car with our dog Tessa while I made the trek up to the top with our daughter.
The trail to the summit is a paved path but quite steep which finishes in stairs. This path would be too steep for a stroller. The alternative is to walk the roadway or you can take a shuttle from the summit parking lot. The views from up top were very nice and there is a nice little picnic area as well.
After our stop here we then got back on the road. We ran into some decent sized hail, winds and heavy rains at the New York-Vermont border as we passed through the Washington Correctional Facilities which forced us to pull over. When we thought the hail had passed and the rain appeared to be getting lighter we headed back out on the road to be hit with hail again, not 5 minutes down the road. We pulled over again and waited it out.
Playing around while riding out the storm
Killington, VT has some spectacular views and much larger hills/mountains.
As we continued to drive along we noted a number of washed out areas including collapsed/washed out homes and bridges. We later found out that this was damaged done by Hurricane Irene which hit the area in August 2011.
We checked into our campsite at Silver Lake State Park mid-afternoon. We greeted at the gate by one of the park wardens. He was very friendly, welcoming and helpful. This was the best campground we have ever camped at. We decided to book a camp site with a lean to. We were amazed at how clean the campground was including the washrooms. This is a fairly small campground with a number of lean to sites located on Silver Lake which is a small lake with a sandy beach within the park. The lean-tos are very well maintained and were very clean as well. Even if you were camping on a site without the lean to’s this would be a nice spot to camp as some of the sites are grassy and those that are not have the fine gravel on them so no large rocks or stones to stick in your back at night.
It was definitely cooler by the time we got to the campground so we changed into pants and long sleeve shirts before doing anything else.
Once the site was set up we headed into Bethel to the general store to get some groceries. They have an on site butcher for fresh meat as well. We took the winding road into town which took about 10 minutes and it was a nice drive as well.
Our daughter had a blast playing in the bin lids in the dining tent while we cooked dinner.
After dinner our daughter was put down to sleep in the tent which we had set up in the lean-to. She played for about 30 minutes or so in the tent before zonking out. She was having a blast in the tent scooting around, checking out the pockets, our sleeping bags, and pushing her face into the sides of the tent seeing how it moved. It was hard for us not to laugh when we would see the imprint of her face pushing out the tent. Once she was out Dave and I decided to play some Sequence. The campground was pretty quiet by 8:30pm.

Our little girl is now 10 months old and has changed so much since that first day we met her. She is still the happy little soul she has always been (at least for the most part) and generally has a smile on her face. She is such a busy little girl, she never stops moving. She is most definitely a strong willed child and is making sure we know it regularly. Her hair is getting much blonder as time passes and she still has beautiful blue eyes. We recently went on a road trip/ tent camping trip with her and she loved the tent (you can read more about that trip in some of my other posts).

Technically this will be about the first night and the following days adventures since we headed out after dinner and a bath the first night.
Loaded in the car and ready to go
As soon as we had loaded up the car the skies opened up and the heavy rain started. We didn’t want to delay getting on the road too long as we didn’t want to mess with our daughters bedtime too, too much. We waited a few minutes then decided to head out anyways since it did not look like the rain was going to let up. We drove through the rain on and off until about the Hwy 35 exit. We decided just to head along the 401 for the quickest and most direct route for the first portion of our trip.
We crossed over into the USA at Ogdensburg, NY. This is a very small bridge crossing and no large trucks or trailers are permitted on the bridge. It is a metal grate bridge so with the slow posted driving speed it can be a rather noisy trip over. We were the only ones on the bridge when we crossed. The border guard was very friendly and probably got a good chuckle out of us driving over the bridge. He said it was pretty obvious we had not crossed over at this spot before. There is a $2 toll fee after you pass through the crossing.
We stayed at the Quality Inn Gran-View on State Hwy 37. This was the one recommended on Trip Advisor. It was a clean hotel and there was a continental breakfast offered in the morning. One of the up sides was that they do allow dogs. The downside was that they do not have baby cribs, cots or playpens for your little one to sleep in, so we had to share the bed. Our daughter was so excited when we woke her at the hotel. She had to climb all over the bed, us and the pillows when we were trying to sleep. It ended up being a rather late night before she finally wore herself out.
We were off the next morning fairly early on our way to Lake Placid. We drove through the outskirts of Saranac Lake on the way, but Dave was very focused on getting to our destination for the night that there was not much stopping along the way. We stopped in a little town along the way to pick up a few grocers and pick up some lunch. We ended up stopping on the side of the road in front of a cute little cemetery to have our picnic lunch and allow our daughter to stretch her legs a little. Where possible we did stray a little from the more direct route and took some winding and more scenic roads instead as we approached the Lake Placid area. There were some beautiful mountain views along the way.
We arrived at the campground in the early afternoon. We stayed at ADK Adirondack Loj. We had decided to rent a canvas cabin to ease our daughter into the whole concept of tent camping. The check in was nice and quick. They were however warning lots about bears. The canvas cabin was not what we expected, but was rather a canvas tent on a platform with 3 sets of single bunk beds. Since bunk beds weren’t going to work with a 9 month old, we decided we would set up our tent within the tent (we have a small canoe tripping tent so it fit very easily inside). There is no privacy between the canvas cabins and you are not permitted to set up another tent on the site. While the campground was nice enough, next time we would most likely stay somewhere else as this was quite a ways out of the town of Lake Placid. The great part of staying here is the proximity to a wide range of hiking trails on site.
Lake Placid Ski jumps from a distance
Once the tent was set up we headed to the little shop on site to get some information about the various hikes on site and for recommendations. The ladies in the store suggested we hike out to Rocky Falls since it was a nice destination. This was roughly an 8.5km hike from our campsite. The trail was moderate- rocky trail near the beginning with some ups and downs, but overall there were no real challenges for us. We only passed 1 person on the trails so it was nice and quiet and we could hear the birds and enjoy the woods.
Once we reached the falls Dave went in for a swim with the dog while our daughter had fun splashing at the waters edge and enjoying the view.
We did find the blackflies to be quite thick on the trail, so I would recommend some bug spray or bug patches while hiking this trail.
Once we returned to camp we headed into the town of Lake Placid to do some wandering and have dinner. We settled on 3 Bears for dinner. The service was excellent, great views and the food was good as well. Lake Placid is a really cute little town with some neat shops as well as your standard stores, lots of places to eat and spectacular views. We would love to return to this area again to do some more exploring.
Our daughter was too excited again to sleep this night so we were up fairly late while she checked out every square inch of the tent and climbed on us.

It has been quite some time since I last posted (almost a month). We had a busy week preparing for our camping trip and then we were away for just over 2 weeks. Now that the dust has settled a little I can get back to more regular postings.
I will be posting a number of posts about our trip – where we stayed, what we saw and our route so stay tuned for that later this week and next.
The week before we left on our vacation my parents came up for a night to have a visit with Paige and attend music class with her. Paige was in her element at music, but a little distracted having Nanna & Pops there to entertain as well. The next morning Paige was loving her snuggles out on the porch and stories with Nanna while my dad was cutting up a fallen tree in our ravine for us.
I had my follow up appointment with the Naturopath that week and she has started me on a few different supplements to try and sort some things out for me. Hopefully these will help.
We had Paige’s 9 month appointment. She weighed in around 20lbs so pretty much the same as her 6 month appointment. Developmentally she is ahead on most milestones, however her joints are much looser than most littles ones at her age.
I also had my physical done at the same time and as always the Dr suggested I loose some weight, but said that it was understandable that I needed to lose a few since I am busy with a little one. It was also suggested that I need to be more active (I did explain the amount of hiking/walking we do). So maybe I need to control my portion sizes a little?!
Paige was a great help in packing for our trip and had to check out all of our bins before I could pack anything in them. On top of that Paige decided that the day we were leaving on our trip (Thursday June 21) she would climb the stairs while I was out hanging laundry. So we now have a much busier girl on our hands.
Don’t forget to check back tomorrow for the start of our camping adventures and travels.
I am sitting here enjoying the peace and quiet of the early morning and listening to the birds while I enjoy my cup of coffee, while my diapers soak. It rained last night so things have really greened up and it is much quieter than many other mornings when the construction starts about 4:30 am.
Our hike last Monday was good. There were 3 of us mamas with our little ones on our backs. The little ones were having a great time chatting up a storm as we headed out on the trails and they all napped on the way back. It was a muggy day but we still covered 7.5 km. In the woods the heat wasn’t so bad, it was when we would come to a clearing you could feel the heat and humidity hit you like a wall.
Paige had a blast at music that afternoon as well. There were more little ones this week for Paige to interact with. She was really intrigued with the felt board and actually tried to climb it to reach some of the pieces. She has definitely become much more comfortable in the music class setting.
Tuesday we headed to the Naturopath to see if we could find a solution for my seasonal allergies. They have been really bad this year so hopefully we can find something that will help that I can take while still nursing. Right now I am trying one thing and I have a follow up this week. It has been a few years since I last saw a Naturopath, but had a great experience with the one I saw out in Victoria, BC.
Wednesday we hung out in the yard, and swam in the pool. It had definitely warmed up and Paige was having a great time in the pool. She is not big on being in a life jacket and prefers to be free to kick about and swim.
Thursday was our last Baby Beats class from the previous session so Paige got her certificate and had a great time playing with the other little ones. She is no longer shy at all and was determined to keep scooting up to the teacher and trying to climb inter her lap. She also had a great time with the felt board again. Also this week she tried out the drum and thought that was pretty neat, although she did seem to enjoy chewing on the end of the drum stick more!
Friday we didn’t make it out to our stroller walk since we had to have someone in to look at our reverse osmosis system. Instead we spent the day in the yard, in the pool and went for a walk up the road. Paige was a busy girl and kept me hopping. She was also really into making big messes. So Friday night was a later night cleaning.
Saturday was a lovely day and since Dave was working I had a friend over with her little one. She was also babysitting another little one and brought along one of her friends and little ones. We had a nice lunch and then hung out in the pool with all of the babies. During our swim my lovely dog decided to go wandering in the ravine and was so kind to bring me back an animal part. Not sure where it came from, but kind of gross so she had to be tied up outside until Dave came home and could bathe her.
That evening we went out for a nice dinner and then took Paige and Tessa for a walk up the road as a family. It has been a while since we have just gone for a family walk on our road so it was nice. Another home was torn down recently on our road to make way for Hwy 407 and they are preparing to take another one down. So there were lots of changes for us to see on our walk.
Yesterday was a nice quiet family day. We went out for breakfast in the morning then came home and hung out at home. We went for a swim in the pool after lunch and then afterwards hung out on the deck until Paige was ready for her afternoon nap. We started sorting our gear for our upcoming camping trip and made our lists of last minute items to pick up and things to do. I can’t wait to take Paige camping and see how she reacts to sleeping in a tent and enjoying the outdoors 24/7. After our camping she will also finally get to meet my husband’s family who she hasn’t yet met. It should be a nice trip and will be nice to spend some family time together in the outdoors.
Today my parents are coming up for the afternoon and night and to go with Paige to her music class. I know Paige is excited to see them since she was up in the middle of the night and was wound right up. I had to explain to her that it was not time to get up yet and she would have to wait until after lunch to see her Nanna & Pops. She is still sleeping this morning, so maybe she understood?!
This is a fairly simple easy carrot cake recipe that I was given a number of years ago which I have made some alterations too, to make it a little healthier and to cut out the amount of oil and sugar. Hope you enjoy.
Ingredients:
2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
3 cups shredded carrots
1 cup apple sauce
4 eggs
Preheat oven to 325oF. Grease a 13x9x2 pan. In mixer combine first 6 ingredients until mixed. Add carrots, apple sauce and eggs. Mix until combined. Beat for 2 minutes. Pour into pan. Bake for 40 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean. Let cool then top with cream cheese icing.
Optional: you can add raisins or walnuts to the batter before cooking as well.
Cream Cheese Icing
1-3oz pkg of light cream cheese
1/4 cup butter
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups sifted icing sugar
In a mixer beat together cream cheese, butter and vanilla until light and fluffy. Gradually add icing sugar, beating until smooth.
First off I am sorry it has been so long. We have gotten so busy around here (not really sure with what) that I didn’t really have much time to sit down and write up some posts. I am going to try and get a little ahead over the next couple of days (time permitting) so there won’t be such a long break again. Fingers crossed!
Paige has gotten over waking herself up from sitting in her sleep, but with this heat has been waking up thirsty every night for the last week and a half between 11:00pm – 12:00 for a “snack”. It means I am struggling to get used to being woken up once a night again, either that or I stay up to try and get her fed again before I head to sleep.
Construction of the highway has been very busy the past couple of weeks as well which means they start early in the morning and it also means it can be tricky getting in and out of our place. On the upside some of the expropriated homes have come down on our road so hoping that means the one next door will be coming down soon. Also with all of this construction maybe they will be done our section soon which will also include some nice new paving on our road. Paige loves watching the big trucks go by.
The day we had our pool filled we unfortunately had to take down Paige’s swing set since it had been eaten from the inside out by carpenter bees. I think we might have to wait until next year for a new swing set now.
Last post we were getting the pool filled that day. It has taken some time to warm up enough to be tolerable but today we spent some time in the pool together. Even though the water still feels quite cool, Paige was having a blast and did not want to come out. She swam a bit on her back in her life jacket then had fun floating around in one of our floating loungers splashing the water.
After swimming we hung out on the porch playing until her afternoon nap time when we headed inside where it was a little cooler. We topped off the day with a barbecue at our place with friends.
Also I was able to get the paint colour fixed (thank goodness) it is a little lighter than we wanted since it was a lighter base used to get the “wrong” colour I had originally asked for, but at least it is in the right tone. I also managed to get one coat of paint on half of our kitchen cabinets. They definitely look better, but boy were the fumes strong from the melamine paint.
Tuesday May 29 Paige had a swimming lesson where we worked on jumping off the edge of the deck and going underwater. Paige couldn’t get enough of going under water. She especially loved when we would go right to the bottom and back up (there is no real deep area in the pool where we take lessons).
That Wednesday we had a hike with a friend in Durham Forest. We did the Red Oak and Spruce loop. It was a great day to be out hiking and the loop is about 8km. Unfortunately we dropped the head rest to the pack on the first time round so I ended up having to hike this entire loop again. Thank goodness the weather held out. On the second time round it was amazing how different the trail seemed as we noticed things we had missed the first time round. Paige was really enjoying seeing all of the different butterflies that she could point out to me.
Thursday was Baby Beats which Paige absolutely loves. The morning was spent playing out on the porch.
Friday we worked in the yard before the wind and rain storms hit that afternoon. \The wind was wild and brought down a great deal of branches and leaves. It looked like a tornado had been through our yard. Some of the branches that came down were bigger than some trees. So Saturday was spent trying to clean up the yard. Paige chipped in with the clean up, even if it was only 1 leaf at a time.
Sunday turned into a nice day and we spent it catching up with one of my husband’s buddies from school who came out to share some exciting news with us.
This past Monday we led a hike out on the Seaton Trail from Whitevale. It was overcast so not too bad for our hike. We covered about 7.5km. The hike always seems to go by quickly when you are in good company.
That afternoon was the start of a new session of Baby Beats which overlaps for 2 weeks with the session that is just coming to an end, which means Paige gets to go to music 2 times in 1 week for 2 weeks straight. There were only 2 little ones at the class so Paige got to choose some of the songs and was having a great time being the centre of attention and snuggling up to the teacher.
Tuesday was our last swimming class so we did a little of everything. There were no life jackets used this class. The little ones also got to go down the slide once more. Paige got a nice little certificate which will go in her scrapbook (when I actually get around to starting it). That afternoon it was a great afternoon to play out on the back deck and enjoy the fresh air. Paige had fun singing songs and playing her instruments.
Wednesday we walked at the zoo with one other mommy and her little one. I am glad we had decided to shift the walk an hour earlier since it was very busy with students and daycares and it was becoming so hot at the zoo by the time we left. We did check out the kids zoo, which I hadn’t even noticed before. Paige really enjoyed watching the Prairie Dogs run around their enclosure.
Unfortunately by the time we got home my migraine was getting the better of me so I had to climb into bed while Paige played so nice and quietly in my bedroom until I could function a little again. She seemed to understand that Mommy couldn’t play and that I needed to lay down since she played quietly and didn’t fuss once.
Thursday was Baby Beats again. Paige has grown so much more comfortable at these classes now and doesn’t hesitate to join the other little ones up at the felt board or check out the other instruments put in the middle for them to all play with.
Friday we were out for our usual stroller walk with 2 other moms and babes. It was a bright sunny day but with the breeze off the lake it wasn’t too hot. After afternoon nap we played/worked out in the yard to get some things done before the rain was to arrive.
Saturday we finally picked up the final load of mulch (1 yard) that we had been putting off getting. We transplanted and split 2 of our large hostas that needed to come out of some of my other gardens as well which really cleaned up the way the back yard looks. We also managed to pull up a bunch more of the mustard garlic that keeps taking over the hill in our yard. Our gardens have really exploded with all of this rain and heat. We have never seen our plants do so well. It is nice to see and things are really filling in.
Yesterday we spent the day taking it easy and just enjoying each others company. We started with breakfast on the porch. Paige had her nap while we got a few things done around the place then it was time for all of us to swim. After swimming we played on the porch and had some snuggles then Paige went down for her afternoon nap. During her nap Dave and I sorted out the details of our trip out east that is coming up since plans fell through that we had accounted for in the middle of our trip so we had to make some phone calls to switch check in dates and reconfigure our plan. In the evening friends came for dinner and Paige had her playmate to play with while we all caught up since it had been a little bit since we had all gotten together
Today we are off for a hike on the Seaton trail. Depending on the heat, not sure if we will make it as far as we did last week but we shall see. Then it will be Baby Beats in the afternoon. This week there should be a few more little ones at the class which will be fun for Paige.
Paige is still growing like a weed. We have her 9 month well baby check up next week at which time we will find out her current weight and height, so we will just have to wait until then to see how much she has grown. She is becoming a very strong willed little character. Still a very happy soul who loves her music. She has herself into a pretty good routine now and lets us know when she needs her nap if we have missed it. She is also making it clear these days that she would prefer to be in the carrier on my back rather than her stroller – only catch if we are in a store she likes to grab things off of the rack and tuck them into the carrier so I have to be ever watchful.
Favourite things to do: Singing songs, bouncing to the beat and using her shaker or sticks at music Swimming Bath Time Going for Hikes Playing outside Being able to go naked with the hot weather Stories Skyping with family Snuggles Chatting up a storm Talking to her toys Grocery Shopping
Milestones: Sitting up on her own from lying down Pulling herself up Can stand on her own Able to choose outfits and food from limited selection Greater understanding of what is being said to her Able to follow very basic instructions (ie: please sit on your bum) Sharing things Pointing to something
Favourite Foods: Frozen wild blueberries Oatcakes Plain Greek Yogurt Apricots Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese Cheerios Blackberries Frozen Peas Avocado Will still try anything put in front of her and will try it various times throughout the meal even if she didn’t like it the first try.
